Along with your A/C unit, the duct work makes a significant difference in the proper air distribution, energy efficiency and increased level of comfort in your home or business.

When you choose Longhorn Air for your new system installation, we'll:

1. Inspect your duct work, and

2. Make repairs to significant problems in the duct work, or

3. Upgrade your duct work to sheet metal.

Longhorn Air NEVER uses inferior duct board in our HVAC installations. What that means for you is better air, more comfort, and higher energy efficiency due to the elimination duct leakage (or the breakdown of duct board over time).

For a free estimate on converting to refrigerated air with new sheet metal duct work, call the professionals at Longhorn Maintenance Heating and Cooling at 915-852-7334.

The Evaporative Coolers Fluctuating Temperatures

Most evaporative coolers are only prepared to cool efficiently up to approximately  85-90 degrees in our extreme summer heat...and that’s if we don’t have elevated humidity like what’s coming to our area today and for the next few days.

Once El Paso's outdoor temperatures soar above the 100+ degree level, you can expect to feel quite a few degrees of inconsistency with the indoor cooling if you have a swamp cooling system. In addition, you can also expect the system to run a lot more than normal — near continuous in some instances.
If it feels like your evap cooler isn’t quite reaching the temperature you set it to this time of year; it’s actually completely normal for these hot, hot days. Your evaporative cooler is doing the best it can do.

Converting to refrigerated air is the only way to completely control the indoor temperature (and humidity). If you are simply not cool, comfortable or concerned about the operation of your old system, it may be time for a conversion to refrigerated air.

If you have a refrigerated air system already and are seeing (and feeling) more than a few degrees temperature swing from what your thermostat is set at during these hot days, this is NOT normal. You could be experiencing an air conditioner break down. It would be wise to schedule a service check.

Convert to Refrigerated Air or Replace That Old System…It’s the Smartest Investment You Can Make in Your Home.

[caption id="attachment_560" align="alignnone" width="2560"]Convert to refrigerated air to add value and make your home more sellable Convert to refrigerated air to add value and make your home more sellable[/caption]

People look at home improvements for two reasons: 1. they either make your life easier or more comfortable, and/or 2. they want increase the property value of the home.

Upgrading your HVAC system to a high-efficiency heating and cooling is a great way to add value to your home. And, at the same time, you can decrease your heating and cooling costs up to 20-40% by replacing an inefficient system. You’ll may also enjoy a system that doesn’t run constantly, reducing noise and improving the cool comfort of your home.

Currently, buyers are quite selective about homes they will consider in El Paso. One fact is for sure…it’s hard to sell a home that is equipped with evaporative cooling and not refrigerated air. Converting to refrigerated air with a new high efficiency air conditioner and variable speed furnace will add value to your home and help it sell like no other feature will! The state of your HVAC equipment has the potential to make homeowners back away from bidding on your home, or rush to get in their offer before someone else does.

How to Decide Between a Cooling Repair or a Replacement

If you’re starting to hear threats of an A/C or evaporative cooler wearing out, then you have to be pondering the question: “Do I replace this old thing or do I try to get it fixed?” Here is what Longhorn Air suggests you consider when coming to the answer”

HVAC System Life Expectancy

Because of our extreme El Paso summers, most refrigerated air system lasts about 10-15 years. But, we are luckier with the furnace. They are warrantied for about 20 years and most will make it to that!

Evaporative coolers are built to last for about 5-10 years. Of course, many last longer. But, they are usually warrantied for only 5 years. The cost of replacing one is less than that of refrigerated air, but by the time you replace 3 or 4 at their cost plus labor, you are pretty close to what it would have cost you to install one HVAC system.

Life expectancy should help with your decision to repair or replace. You probably won’t want to put many hundreds -- or even thousands -- of dollars into a repair of broken A/C if it is at, or nearing, life expectancy, only for it to completely fail soon after. The money you will spend on repairs could be invested in a new system.

Newer HVAC systems are much higher in efficiency. Your old refrigerated air system is probably at only 10-12 SEER at best, especially if it is 7-10 years old or older. Today, standards require an efficiency of at least 14 SEER to meet code. With a higher SEER, homeowners enjoy more efficiency…meaning more in energy savings. Lower utility bills could potentially pay for your new air conditioning system if you replace it instead of repair a low efficiency one. Something to consider.

Tax Credits and Utility Rebates

It never hurts to get an estimate for a new system when you experience problems with your old one. Tax credits and utility company rebates offer free money on certain systems if you purchase and install new based on their recommendations. Ask our estimator what is available today in our area or at EnergyStar.gov. The extra research may help you with your decision between repairing and replacing.

When to Repair

Of course, sometimes it doesn’t make sense to replace a system. If you already have one that is high in efficiency and is less than 10 years old, a repair is probably recommended. While you may think your condenser is acting up and causing a cooling issue, it could be something as minor as a thermostat needing a replacement. That’s not a very big $repair$.

Most contractors are honest and will likely only recommend a repair if:

  • your system is not nearly a decade old
  • your system is still under warranty
  • you have a higher SEER system already
  • you haven’t needed any repairs in the past
  • you won’t be staying in the home much longer

There is one difference that must be stated about estimates for repairs or replacements because a lot of confusion is centered around this it seems. Repair estimates have a charge associated with them. With a repair, a trained technician is performing a service: diagnostics. Diagnosing a problem and preparing a repair estimate takes skill, training and time. This technician may recommend a replacement, however. If that is the case, that service would be applied to your purchase should you choose Longhorn Air for that. With a replacement estimate, generally a knowledgeable project manager can assess your system based on the information your provide as well as a quick check, some measurements and photos. Replacement estimate are free at Longhorn Air.

What Air Conditioning System is Best? Consider Rheem. Here’s Why…

Your investment in heating and air conditioning is probably the biggest one you’ll ever make. But, selecting a new HVAC system for your home is a difficult one, mainly because there are so many options. It can all be so confusing.

It’s because of this that Longhorn Air offers a free in-home survey and estimate for a new Rheem HVAC system. We don’t charge you to research the costs and compare the features before committing to any one brand. And, we’re ok with that because we know that in the end you’ll be convinced that Rheem ranks among the best that money can buy!

So, what brand is best when it comes to HVAC? Here’s why we suggest it is Rheem:

When it comes to efficiency, Rheem ranks among the highest.
Much like automobiles, today’s air conditioners are required to rate their equipment according to its efficiency. This rating is known in the industry as a SEER, or Seasonal Energy Efficiency Rating. The higher the SEER, the more efficient the equipment. And, the higher the SEER, the more savings in energy usage you’ll enjoy!

Rheem Prestige Series™ high SEER models are the among the highest efficiency systems that you can buy today. For example, the Prestige with a SEER of 18 is among the highest available. It’s significantly higher than today’s standard models of other brands, many of which carry SEERs of only about 14. Higher SEER models are generally a little more expensive up front, but they easily make up the difference by reducing your home energy bills over the long run. That increase in SEER is going to save you significantly every month when your utility bill arrives!

Also know this…it’s not just that key role in your home energy expenses every month that a premium model of Rheem plays, they also last longer. For years to come, Rheem systems (if well maintained) continue to run at high efficiency providing an extended period of high performance.

Not all air conditioners are built the same. That is especially true of Rheem.
The compressor is the heart of an A/C system. On a hot day, it works long and hard—sometimes in El Paso that is all day long! Rheem offers the highly advanced scroll compressor in every condensing unit they produce. Scroll compressors are recognized by the industry as the leader in reliability, efficiency and quiet operation.

Also, with some condensing units, the fan can be another source of bothersome noise. Rheem units have a grill design that minimizes air restriction for the ultimate in quiet fan operation.
The right size for the right home. There is Rheem model for every environment.
An air conditioner that’s too small won’t keep your home sufficiently cool, especially in El Paso where our heat is extreme. But, what many homeowners don’t realize is that an oversized system will cycle (turn on and off) more than necessary, too. This also wastes energy and will possibly put undue strain on the A/C compressor. That could potentially cause premature failure. It definitely causes you to have higher utility bills. Rheem makes many models from which to choose…one perfectly sized to fit any home or building.

Longhorn Air can help determine the perfect Rheem model for your home by making a careful study of its size, layout and your cooling requirements. Other considerations are built in to every Rheem model we recommend: window dimensions and exposure, floor space, and insulation. Longhorn Air also looks at the direction your home faces and the style of your home (2 stories; open concept, cathedral ceilings, etc.). These are all factors in our proposal for a properly-sized Rheem system. We’ll specify what Rheem system will work best for maximum comfort, efficiency and performance based upon our free in-house assessment and estimate.
Dependability. Efficiency. Performance. All hallmarks of Rheem and Longhorn Air.

When you are looking for a new HVAC system and contractor, look for the ones who offer what matters most to you, your home performance and within your budget! When you choose a high performing brand like Rheem and a contractor like Longhorn Air who’s been providing El Paso homeowners with comfort for over 30 years, you’ve chosen reputation, dependability and simply the best the industry has to offer!

Why Referrals and Online Reviews Should Matter to You

Opening your home to contractors can be risky business. We know and respect that at Longhorn Air. That is why we provide referrals and post reviews as your best reference to our contracting services. But, there are some home service contractors who insist that online reviews don’t matter. The truth is that reviews should matter because we value experiences and verification of the quality of work completed AND WE KNOW YOU DO, TOO!

El Paso homeowners are great about sharing their experiences with HVAC contractors in our area. And, that is great for the many who depend on this information to hire heating and cooling contractors they read about at Facebook, Google or at the websites. If the contractor you are hiring doesn’t post reviews or provide references when you ask for them, you may want to reconsider hiring them. With conversions to refrigerated air, it’s especially important to choose a trustworthy HVAC professional who can prove their ability for these sometimes difficult installations and repairs.

At Longhorn Air, we know we can’t please all of the people all of the time…but we sure work hard to try! That’s why we’ve posted our reviews for many years. We believe it is also why we’ve been in business in El Paso and providing comfortable cooling solutions for homeowners here for more than 30 years.

[caption id="attachment_546" align="alignnone" width="800"]Tips on how to monitor and run the A/C while on vacation Tips on how to monitor and run the A/C while on vacation[/caption]

It's that time of year when many of us are heading out of town for summer vacation. While we are excited about getting away from the home for a bit, many still worry about what will be going on with home systems while we are away. That is especially true of people when it comes to the HVAC in El Paso’s hottest summer months.

When you are on a break, the A/C refrigerated air system can have a little break, as well. This shouldn’t compromise your cooling system at all. Many people wonder how they can control that so that the A/C provides the proper amount of “away-from-home” cooling while they are gone. Or, how they’ll adjust the thermostat for the best vacation settings from afar.

Some of the best industry sources say that you should set your thermostat 4-6 degrees warmer than you normally set it when you are away. For example, if you like to keep the temperature around 72 degrees when you are home, set the thermostat to 78 degrees for your getaway.

DO NOT TURN YOUR A/C OFF COMPLETELY. Additionally, you shouldn't set the thermostat too high or turn the system off completely because it can create more problems. 4-6 degrees is the sweet spot for setting your thermostat because it allows you to experience some savings while you are away. It also keeps your home dry from humidity and the air clean. Warmer temperatures and higher humidity create a perfect environment for mold and mildew to occur. It also may ensure that your system won't burn too much energy cooling things back down upon your return.

For help controlling and monitoring the A/C, consider installing a Wi-Fi thermostat, like Ecobee in your home. The Ecobee thermostats enables you to control your refrigerated air systems from your smart phone, computer or tablet. Additionally, Ecobee will alert you while away from the home when there's a problem with your system. This can help you identify small problems before they become bigger issues.

Longhorn Maintenance Heating and Cooling will be happy to help you set up your Ecobee thermostat so that you get the maximum benefits of your system while you are in or out of the home. Call us for an estimate on a smart thermostat installation, like Ecobee, or to convert to refrigerated air.

How Long HVAC-Things Should Last

Your heating or cooling system is a significant investment and it only makes sense to get as much life out of it as possible. With proper care and yearly maintenance, you will get the longest life from your system. Without it, you will be lucky to make it last through its full warranty period.
Below, Longhorn Air El Paso provides what we believe to be a life expectancy for HVAC equipment…and some other HVAC-things.

First, we must say that HVAC systems require proper and regular maintenance in order to provide maximum comfort, work most efficiently and to enjoy long life. Conventional HVAC systems are built to last about 15 to 25 years. (Furnaces in El Paso last on on average 15-20 years, while higher usage air conditioning units only last 10-15 years.
There are many things that can reduce the lifespan of HVAC equipment that you should avoid, including:
• Lack of annual maintenance
• Poor initial brand quality. We recommend a premium Rheem system.
• Oversizing or undersizing the system
• Improper installation procedures
• Inordinately high usage or high loads
• Improper usage, such as heating or cooling with windows and doors open
• High usage environments, such as cooling season in El Paso

Being mindful to avoid these negative factors will promote a longer life of your HVAC system.

Ductless Mini-splits
Ductless mini-splits last a surprisingly long time. On average, they can last upwards of 20 years. While all ductless systems are not the same, premium brands, like Rheem, can last longer than some conventional forced air conditioning systems. Do know that your ductless mini-split will also need to be properly maintained and taken care of to last long, just like a conventional air conditioning system.

You all know how Longhorn Air feels about ductwork…NO FIBERGLASS DUCT BOARD ALLOWED! Sheet metal ductwork is made to last a lifetime; even longer than the HVAC system itself. Duct board only last 10 years or so, especially if it gets any moisture or humidity running through it. It breaks down over time and puts fiberglass particles into the air flow. Sheet metal duct work is superior in quality of construction and air quality. Sheet metal ductwork, when installed properly, is a ONE AND DONE installation.

Your thermostat plays a very important role in how comfortable and efficient your system will run. While a thermostat doesn't necessarily have a set lifespan, on average you can expect them to last about 5-10 years. Thermostats do wear out and start malfunctioning mostly due to aging wiring. Replacing your old thermostat is a good idea these days especially because so many more options are available—from simple to programmable to Wi-Fi. Programmable and Wi-Fi versions can help you save money on your utility bills as it relates to heating and cooling because they offer eco-settings that provide scheduling based on your occupancy. They run at peak when you are home; and can be programmed to running less when you are away.

Air filters can make or break your HVAC system. Clogged or blocked air filters account for more than half of all HVAC repairs. They should be replaced per manufacturer instructions to keep your HVAC system running properly. For most, that is at least every other month. High MERV media filters for air cleaners usually will last 3 or 4 months. Any filter, not changed regularly, will compromise the operation and efficiency in the HVAC system and air quality in your home.

The HVAC system is one of the more expensive investments homeowners make. Properly maintaining yours is a smart choice for extending the life of it and avoiding costly repairs or replacement.

For estimates on all things HVAC, call the professionals at Longhorn Maintenance Heating and Cooling at 915-852-7334 or visit us at www.longhornairpe.com.
